SCROLLBOY

User guide for the ScrollBoy website

This quick guide will teach you how to use the ScrollBoy website and all its fabulous features

Getting started

The list on the left is the site's own selection of subreddits, sorted into sections. Press any name and its gallery opens: every picture and video posted there, newest first. Keep scrolling and more arrives. There is no next page and no end until the archive runs out.

Any other subreddit works too. Type its name into the box above the list and press Search, or paste a Reddit address. The name needs no r/ in front, and capitals do not matter.

Everything on the site comes from public archives of Reddit, not from Reddit itself. That is why a subreddit that has since been banned or emptied still shows what was posted there, and why the pictures include posts that were later deleted.

You can browse without an account: the newest posts of every subreddit and feed are free to see, and so is the newest post on any profile. The rest wear a lock until there is a membership; see the next section.

Account and membership

Press Register in the header to make an account: an email address and a password, nothing more. Press Log in to come back to it. Forgot the password? The login box has Reset your password, and the link goes to the address the account is under. Signed in, the Account button in the header opens your pages: the membership, what you have saved, and the account itself.

A membership opens the rest of the site:

  • Everything, all the way down. Every post of every subreddit, feed and profile, not just the newest ones, and the way out to the post on Reddit from every card.
  • Saving. Subreddits, user profiles and single posts, kept on your account, so they are there on your phone as well as your computer.
  • Your own subreddits. Add any subreddit to your list, by name, r/name or a Reddit link, sort your list into sections of your own, name and colour them, and drag names between them.
  • Your own feeds. Every section you make is a feed too: all of its subreddits as one stream.

Membership is paid in crypto, for a fixed period, and does not renew by itself: you get an email before it ends, and paying again is the same steps as the first time. Press PAY NOW on your membership page and the payment page opens in a tab of its own, with a quick guide in six pictures under the cards. The full payment guide walks through all of it, including how to get hold of some crypto if you never have. When a membership lapses, nothing you saved goes anywhere; the member features close until it is paid again.

The cards

Each card is one post. Under the picture stands its title, then the name of whoever posted it and the subreddit it came from. Both names are links: the poster's opens everything that person has posted, across every subreddit, which is the Users half of the site; the subreddit's opens that subreddit here.

A row of buttons comes up at the foot of the picture when the mouse is over it:

  • The heart saves the post itself to your Saved tab, so you can find it again without searching.
  • The person saves the poster to your list on the left.
  • The arrow down saves the picture to your device.
  • The pictures icon opens a post that has several of them, so you can see them all.

Saving is part of a membership. So is the arrow in the top corner of a card, the way out to the original post on Reddit: it sits up there, away from the rest, so it is hard to press by accident. The corner on the left says what the card is, a picture, a video or a gallery, and in a feed, which subreddit it came from.

A number on a card means the same picture was posted more than once. The copies are folded into one card, and the number says how many there were and by how many posters. See Hide duplicates.

The viewer

Press a picture to open it full size. The viewer shows the picture, or plays the video, over the gallery.

  • ← and →, or the arrows at the sides, move to the previous and next post.
  • Esc, the cross, or a press outside the picture closes it and puts you back where you were in the gallery.
  • The row of buttons under the picture: save the post, save the poster, save the picture to your device, and open the post on Reddit.
  • A post with several pictures is shown as a gallery inside the viewer, with its own arrows.

The gallery shows a small copy of each picture. The viewer fetches the full one, which for a large picture takes a moment; the small copy stays on screen until it arrives.

The switches

The five switches at the top of the list on the left decide what is in the gallery. They apply to whatever is open, at once.

  • Media posts only hides posts that are only text or a link to somewhere else, so the gallery is pictures and videos and nothing in between.
  • Show pictures and Show videos are include-switches. With one off, that kind is left out; with both off nothing can appear, and the gallery says so.
  • Hide duplicates folds the same picture posted several times into one card. It compares the pictures themselves, not their names, so a re-upload at another size still counts as the same one. Off, every copy is its own card.
  • Show deleted posts brings back the posts whose picture is gone from Reddit. See Deleted posts.

The counters under the switches say what the gallery holds: how many posts were found, how many of them are deleted, how many were duplicates, how many are new since your last visit, and how many are media posts.

Layout

The buttons in the middle of the header set how the gallery is laid out. Columns is how many cards stand side by side, four to eight on a computer. Ratio is the shape of the cards: masonry keeps every picture in its own proportions and packs them, the fixed shapes crop them all to the same one, square, 4:3, 3:4, 16:9 or 9:16.

The setting is kept in the browser, so the gallery opens the way you left it next time, on that device.

Saving

Three things can be saved: subreddits, users and single posts. Saving is part of a membership, and what you save is kept on your account, so it is there on your phone as well as your computer, and survives a new browser.

  • Subreddits go on the list on the left from the Save Subreddit button at the foot of a subreddit's gallery, or by name from Add a subreddit on the list. Import subreddits on your account pages takes a whole list of names at once, and Restore default subreddits brings the site's own selection back. Sort them into sections of your own, with a name and a colour each, and drag them between sections.
  • Users go on the list from the person button on a card or in the viewer.
  • Posts go to the Saved tab, from the heart. A saved post keeps its gallery or its video, so it opens later just as it did.
  • The cross on a row takes it off the list. A saved post is unsaved from its heart.

Users

The Users tab is the other half of the site: one person's posts, across every subreddit, as one gallery. Open a profile from the name on any card, or type a username into the box on the Users tab. Profiles you save are laid out on the Users page with their newest picture, so you can see at a glance who has posted something new.

The newest post on a profile is free to see; the rest, and saving profiles, is part of a membership.

Feeds

Every section on the list is a feed too: all of its subreddits as one stream, newest first, with crossposts between them folded into one card. The Feeds tab lists them. A feed is a page of its own, so it can be bookmarked and shared. Members get a feed for every section they make themselves.

Deleted posts

When a picture is deleted from Reddit, the post stays in the archive but the picture is gone. ScrollBoy notices this as the pictures load and sets those posts aside, so the gallery is not full of grey squares. The counter on the left says how many were set aside. Show deleted posts brings them back, with a note on each, if you want to see what was there.

The videos of some posts are hosted elsewhere and can go the same way; those cards say so when they are opened.

On a phone

On a phone the gallery takes the whole screen. The Subreddits button in the header opens the list and the search box as a drawer; it closes when a search starts, or with the cross. The menu button at the right holds the tabs, the layout button, the account buttons and Support. Columns go from one to three.

If something looks wrong

  • An empty gallery. Check the switches: with Show pictures and Show videos both off, nothing can appear. A subreddit with a note under its name may be private or banned on Reddit; what the archive holds of it still shows.
  • Nothing loads. The archives the site reads from are run by other people and have bad days. The cards show a small turning ring while they wait; try again in a few minutes if it stays.
  • A picture will not open. The original may be gone from Reddit since the card was drawn; the card is marked once the site knows.
  • Locked out of the account. Use Reset your password on the login box; the email goes to the address the account is under. For a payment that did not register, see the payment guide.
  • Something else. Write to us through the contact form: which subreddit or profile you were on and roughly what you were doing. A screenshot helps more than a description.

Nothing is uploaded to ScrollBoy and nothing is hosted here: the pictures and videos are Reddit's, shown from Reddit's own servers. If something of yours is on Reddit and you want it gone, deleting it there removes it here too, usually within a day or two. If that is not possible, write through the form and say which post it is. ScrollBoy is not affiliated with or endorsed by Reddit.
